Hamill has more leeway to be deranged in this Teen-rated game than he did on the kid-friendly Batman: The Animated Series.Īt predetermined points throughout the adventure, you’ll be cordoned off into a specific type of gameplay. The game’s titled Batman but Joker is the central character he’s there in the beginning luring you in, and thereafter constantly on the P.A., taunting you and moving the plot along, playing the same narrative and gameplay roles that GlaDOS did in Portal. While longtime Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy gets top billing, it’s actually Mark Hamill’s performance as the insane jester that runs the show. But the title’s true strength is in the writing and acting: Through a tight script and masterful performances, what sounds on paper like a typical, workaday game becomes a captivating experience and - albeit in a weakened field - a strong contender for game of the year. Arkham features a balanced mix of fighting, stealth and puzzle gameplay perfectly suited to Bruce Wayne’s many talents.

Universitätsverlag WINTER is an academic publisher located in Heidelberg, Germany, who covers the whole field of Humanities with particular interest in literature and language studies. At the same time, the form of the comic (itself reliant on the readers' negotiation of the arranged spaces on the page in front of them) allows Morrison and McKean to reimagine the potential of the superhero genre and inquire into the nature of the relationship between reader and text. Arkham Asylum structures its narrative according to both the layout of the house and to sacred architecture, and it also spatializes sanity and insanity. Underpinning the narrative is a complex examination of the nature of space and the spatial in the graphic novel, and Arkham Asylum uses this examination to self-reflexively interrogate the nature of comic form. The house itself has a story to tell, and the history of the Asylum is interwoven with the tale of Batman's dark night of the soul. In Grant Morrison and Dave McKean's Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth (1989), Batman travels through Gotham City's most famous residence, where his encounters with its inmates force him to reexamine his own psyche.
